South Flank Project, Newman WA (2020-2021)
Worth over AUD$ 4.2 billion, the South Flank Project is located 156km north-west of Newman, Western Australia, and marks Australia’s largest new iron ore mine in over 50 years. Once combined with BHP’s existing Mining Area C in the Pilbara region of WA, it will become the world’s largest operating iron ore hub, with a production capacity of 145 million tonnes of iron ore annually.

Contracting and procurement activities management: Developed, implemented and managed detailed contract and procurement systems and procedures. This included ensuring successful execution of all related strategies and plans, as well as management of negotiations for purchase order terms/conditions and detailed monitoring of contract and purchase order performance, administration and delivery.
Project management advice: Included the creation and ongoing management of inspection, expediting and logistics plans across the project, extending to the provision of quantity surveying services, risk mitigation advice, and contingency planning.
Claims management and dispute resolution: Identified, evaluated and successfully mitigated multiple contractual claims and disputes. This necessitated drafting detailed contract correspondence, ensuring all relevant project teams were fully aware of contractual expectations, identifying and responding to contractual risk, forensic analysis and document keeping, in-depth quantum analysis to assess extent of delays and disruptions, and finally, assisting the legal team in preparing briefs and defences through the provision of expert advice and witness services.
